Benin Banin (mask) - Dogon Tribe

This is the mask of the Dama (funeral celebration). The Animist Dogon believe ‘one dies because the body is tired’. However, the spirit of the deceased will live on in the next born child of the village. The role of the Benin Banin mask is to ward off bad spirits so that only the good remain.
Deceased bodies are placed in burial caves close to the villages. It is the mask’s duty to remain at the entrance of the cave, warding off bad spirits, until the next child is born.
